F1: Frank Williams is dead

by

Sir Frank Williams, founder and former head of the Formula One team of the same name, passed away today at the age of 79, Williams announced. “After being admitted to hospital on Friday, Sir Frank passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his family,” the Formula One team said in a statement.

The deceased was the longest-serving team leader in the history of Formula One, as in 2019 he completed 50 years as the “boss” of a team in the championship. During this time he “commanded” two teams, the second of which, Williams, won seven drivers ‘championships and nine manufacturers’ titles. Frank Williams and his family, including his daughter Claire, who had run Williams daily since 2013, left Formula One after the 2020 Italian Grand Prix as the team was acquired by the US investment firm Dorilton Capital.

Sir Frank Williams, who suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident in 1986 that left him unable to walk, began reducing his Formula One workload in 2012 when he resigned from Williams’ board of directors. Claire Williams took over as the family representative, and was later appointed Deputy General Manager and took over the day-to-day management of the team, however Frank Williams retained the title of General Manager.

The deceased spent some time in hospital in 2016, recovering from pneumonia, and then stopped traveling to the races. He was also admitted to hospital last December.
