Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is in Tinos for the celebrations and events for the anniversary of the torpedoing of the cruiser “Elli”.

The Fifteenth of August is associated by association with Tinos, where the celebration is double, of the Dormition of the Virgin and the anniversary of the torpedoing of the “Ellis”, and is held on the island with all honors.

On the day of the celebration, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated in I.N. of Evangelistria and during it, as is customary, the head of the Navy and the representative of the government board a torpedo boat and lay a wreath at the spot where the frigate “Elli” was sunk during the Divine Liturgy on August 15, 1940 by the Italians. The honorary cannon shots, which are heard at that time in the port, come from the “Cannon of Hell” that was saved from the ship’s carcass and preserved.

This is followed by the procession of the holy image, which is carried by men of the Navy and is followed by the bands of the Navy and the Municipality of Tinos, which play mourning marches, honorable prayers, high priests and a crowd of people.

The procession ends, on the marble platform, in Pantanassi Square, where a Deesis is held and Panegyrics are pronounced. After their end, the procession accompanies the holy icon on its return to the Holy Church of Evangelistria.

The church was built on the spot where on January 30, 1823 the icon of the Annunciation was found after the vision of the nun Pelagia. The Virgin of Tinos is directly connected to the sacrifices of our country for freedom, while the finding of the icon was considered by the Greek chieftains in 1821 to be symbolic of the course of the struggle.
