Ghost schools due to demographics in the Peloponnese – 31 are “locked”

by

Not one, not two but 31 schools will not open this year in Peloponnese by decision of the Region, as there are no students to enroll.

They close one after the other schools in the Peloponnese due to lack of students. In the new school year the bell will not ring in 31 kindergartens and elementary schools. The Ministry of Education is putting the closing schools on hold in the hope that at some point they will reopen, but young families continue to leave especially the mountain villages that are seeing their population decrease…

“Villages that had 1,000 and 2,000 inhabitants have almost been completely abandoned or are being abandoned. And just the fact that kindergartens are closing, because they don’t have children, that means a lot. We had areas that they had 1,000 children and now they have 30″ Peloponnese regional governor Panagiotis Nikas told SKAI.

“The area of Mani 50 years ago, western Mani in particular, had around 800 children. Today it does not have 100. For mountainous Arcadia, leave them. The despot tells me that the bell rings on Sunday and there may not be a congregation” added Mr. Nikas.

The bell will not ring this year mainly in kindergartens, of which 6 in Arcadia, 5 in Corinthia, 6 in Laconia and 3 in Messinia.

The mountainous municipality of Gortynia Arcadia, one of the largest in the country with 70 local communities and 80 settlements, is a municipality that has experienced a large population decline in recent years, with the result that no schools are opening there this year.

“There are 7 primary schools and from this year 5 kindergartens. Unfortunately, two of the kindergartens here in the area are suspended. The nursery school of Lagadion and the nursery school of Valtesinikos, due to the lack of students and thus by decision of the political leadership of the Ministry of Education after the recommendation of the officials of the prefecture, these two schools are suspended this year. It is a sad phenomenon” Stathis Koulis, mayor of Gortynia Arkadia, emphasized to our station.

The doors of the 31 schools in the Peloponnese will not open due to zero enrollments and lack of student potential. It is typical that 11 elementary schools will not have students sitting at their desks this year. Specifically, 1 in Argolis, 3 in Arcadia, 2 in Corinthia, 3 in Laconia and 2 in Messinia.

However, from the side of the ministry, it is emphasized that it is not a closure but a suspension, until they have students again.

“In the Peloponnese indeed 31 school units have been suspended for the last three years without any change in this three years, except for one school unit, a one-seat school that has no students this year and their operation has been suspended. The operation of these schools is suspended every year because we do not want them to be abolished with the wish and hope that one day they will acquire students” Alexandros Koptsis, G.G. noted to SKAI. Primary and Secondary Education and Special Education.

Lots of primary schools and kindergartens in insular and mainland Greece they operate with the minimum number of students, which usually do not exceed five, while a large number of secondary school students are forced every year to migrate to the nearest city in order to attend middle school and high school.
