August 2022: The second coldest since 2021 in Peloponnese and Sterea – See map

by

Although the first 10 days of the month the temperature fluctuated slightly above the normal levels for the season, the second half of the month was particularly “cold”, with the exception of the period of high temperatures between 17 and 19 August.

This year’s August was one of the warmest months recorded in Europe in the last century, but the Eastern Mediterranean, like our country, was an exception to this distribution of extremely high temperatures.

Across Greece, the average maximum daily temperature in August fluctuated below the 2010-2019 average and this was mainly due to the prevalence of particularly low pressure in the Central Mediterranean and unusually high pressure in North-Eastern Europe, a combination that often caused instability in our area and rainfall event.

Last August, 53 meteorological stations of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr recorded negative deviations of the average maximum daily temperature, which are presented in the following map.

Although the first 10 days of the month the temperature fluctuated slightly above the normal levels for the season, the second half of the month was particularly “cold”, with the exception of the period of high temperatures between 17 and 19 August when positive temperature deviations of up to + 5°C.

For the Peloponnese and Central Greece it was the 2nd coldest August since 2010, while for Western Greece and the Aegean Islands it was the 3rd coldest (5th for Crete). The ranking of the average maximum temperatures in the month of August in 7 geographical regions of our country is presented in the next graph.

Meteo graph

It is worth noting how in Macedonia, Central Greece and the Aegean Islands up to 27 days with negative temperature deviations (Samos) were recorded out of a total of 31 days of the month. In Athens, the meteorological station in Gazi recorded 25 days with a maximum temperature lower than the normal levels for the season and an average monthly deviation of -1.3°C. In Thessaloniki the average maximum temperature fluctuated closer to the average of the period 2010-2019, with 15 days of negative temperature deviations.

The last chart summarizes the August 2022 average maximum temperature deviations for each of the 53 weather stations.
