Thessaloniki: The measures of EL.AS., the gatherings and the traffic regulations in view of the opening of the 86th TEF

For the implementation of the measures of order, it is expected that detachments from services of Attica will also be moved. The number of police officers who will take part in the measures will be approximately 3,500.

Particularly elevated will be the police measures in view of the opening of the 86th International Exhibition of Thessaloniki (TIF), the opening of which will be held on Saturday, September 10, by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The operational plan of EL.AS. was decided in consecutive meetings that preceded the last few days. For the implementation of order, security and traffic measures, all the available forces of Thessaloniki will be on foot, while it is expected that platoons will be moved from neighboring prefectures, as well as from services of Attica. As it became known, the number of police officers who will take part in the measures will be approximately 3,500.

According to the plan, detachments of the MAT, YMET, OPKE and Drasi will be deployed in central streets of Thessaloniki, from where the planned demonstrations will pass, while an ELAS helicopter and drones will supervise their progress and give image at the EL.AS Operations Center, at the Thessaloniki Police Station. There will be the staff members of EL.AS. which will coordinate the movements of the police forces.

As in previous years, around the I. Vellidis Conference Center, police cages and railings are expected to be deployed to prevent the movement of protesters towards the International Exhibition Center, while “Aiantas”, the police water cannon.

Already today, increased police patrols have begun in central parts of Thessaloniki, while Traffic and Municipal Police forces are on the streets for illegally parked cars, mainly around the TIF, in view of the implementation of the measures to prohibit and park vehicles.

The demonstrations

Mass participation in Saturday’s protests is expected from unions, collectives, organizations and political movements. So far, officially, the following gatherings have been announced (they are scheduled for the afternoon and will be followed by marches): At 6 p.m. GSEE and ADEDY are calling for a gathering, at the Statue of Venizelos, while for the same time the call of PAME is in Chanth Square. In Kamara (also at 6 p.m.) people close to the extra-parliamentary left and the broader anti-authoritarian space will gather. An hour earlier, an online call is scheduled, at the White Tower, by people who oppose vaccinations. Besides, at 7 pm a gathering is planned at the Statue of M. Alexander, by the National Party “Greeks”. Pre-gatherings will take place from 5 pm in various parts of the city, including by student associations on the university campus.

Tomorrow at 8.30 am the public hospital workers will open the curtain on the mobilizations (POEDIN gathering at the “Hippokrateio” Hospital), while the baton will be taken at 6 pm by the Security Forces who will call for a gathering in the White Tower square.

Traffic measures

In the meantime, the traffic arrangements announced by the Thessaloniki Traffic Directorate, in view of the opening of the 86th TIF and the holding of the two-day conference “The 2nd Thessaloniki Metropolitan Summit”, are put into effect from today (and until Sunday afternoon), starting from with the measure of the ban on stopping and parking on Stratou Avenue and 3rd September Street (the same ban is already in force on Tsimiski, Egnatia and Agia Sofia Streets, as well as on Nikis and M. Alexandrou Avenues).

The stop-parking ban will be extended from tomorrow morning on Angelaki Streets and parts of Ethn Streets. Amynis, Agios Dimitriou, Gr. Lambrakis, Armenopoulou, N. Germanou, M. Andronikou and Iasonidou.

From 3 pm on Saturday, moreover, (depending on the development of the mobilizations and until their completion) a universal traffic ban will apply in the center of Thessaloniki and in particular on the following streets: Stratou Avenue (from Kavtanzoglou to Hanth Square), September 3rd (from M. Alexandrou to Agios Dimitrios), Vas. Olgas (from M. Botsaris to Agia Triados), Vas. Georgiou (from Agia Triados to M. Andronikos), Nikis Avenue, Kountourioti, K. Karamanli (from Katsimidis to C’ September), Egnatia (from Lagada until September 3), Ethn. Amyni (from Agios Dimitrios to White Tower Square), Tsimiski, Agios Dimitrios (from Lagadas to Stefanos Dragoumis), Agia Sophia (from Egnatia to Agia Sophia Square, as well as around Agia Sophia Square), Pavlou Mela and El. Venizelou.

As announced by the Traffic Authority, the movement of vehicles will be conducted by alternative routes (from east to west via Katsimidis – Ring Road – Agios Dimitrios – Olympiados and from west to east via Lagadas – Ring Road – Agios Dimitrios), while traffic wardens will be at key points and will regulate traffic.
