“The most serious situation concerns Sameiro” on the outskirts of the town of Manteigas in Serra da Estrella, which suffered severe damage from the fires, the head of the National Civil Protection Authority said.

The heavy rains that have been hitting Portugal since yesterday have caused floods, falling trees and landslides mainly in the areas affected by the devastating fires of the summer, in the central region of the country, the aid services announced.

“The most serious situation concerns Sameiro” on the outskirts of the town of Manteigas in Serra da Estrella, which suffered severe damage from the fires, the head of the National Civil Protection Authority said.

Torrential rains have caused “landslides” in the burnt areas. The waters carried “tree trunks, mud and even ashes” in their wake, said Flavio Massano, mayor of the city of Manteigas.

The summer fires in the region took place in the heart of the natural park, recognized by Unesco, and reduced to ashes 250,000 hectares of vegetation in the Serra da Estrella
