Upon completion of the project, the surface of the station will cover less than 10% of Exarchion square – 340,000 passengers will travel daily with Line 4.
In the importance of its development Line 4 of the Metro and of the station in Exarchion square the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for infrastructure, Mr. George Karagiannis speaking to the radio station SKAI 100.3 and the journalist Mr. Aris Portosalte.
Responding to the “paraphilology that has been developed for the construction of the station in Exarchia” Mr. Karagiannis clarified that “Exarchia square has an area of 2,984 sq.m. and the space that will be used, after the station is built, is 243 sq.m.”
The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure underlined that “for the first time, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is cooperating with the Local Government in a large project and in particular, it signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Municipality of Athens according to which 2000 trees will be planted in addition to those foreseen”. In addition, as Mr. Karagiannis announced, “architectural competitions will be held for the aesthetic upgrade of all the squares where metro stations will be built”.
“Another originality of Line 4 is that the stations are becoming smaller, while a significant part of the excavation will be done underground in order to ensure the least possible disturbance to residents and professionals” added Mr. Karagiannis.
He agreed with the relevant comment that the new metro line will be a “Parisian line”, as it will be located within the urban fabric, however, as he said “in Paris there are 4 Metro stations per 1 sq. km, while at the same time in Athens per 1 sq.km. we haven’t got around to having a metro station.”
Giving the broader picture of the importance of the project, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure stated that with Metro Line 4 “340,000 people will move every day, while 55,000 vehicles will be removed from the roads”.
He explained that “the location of the Metro stations is done in a scientific way and after preparing studies that take into account a set of parameters”.
Overall, the goal, according to Mr. Karagiannis, is “to overturn the image of the traffic problem in Athens with the new Metro line and the extensions to Piraeus that we are delivering to traffic in the next period and the extension to Ilion that we will announce in 2022 ».
