Kythira: Sailboat with 46 foreigners detected – 16 are minors

Forty six foreigners were rescued last Sunday by the coast guard in Kythera of which the 16 were minors. At the same time, their four traffickers were arrested.

Specifically, on Sunday morning, the Port Authority of Kythera was informed of the existence of a sailing vessel in the sea area of ​​Cape “TRACHILOS” south of Kythera, which may be carrying foreigners.

Immediately officers of the relevant Port Authority went with patrol vehicles to the above area where they found a sailing vessel in a difficult position, due to the prevailing weather conditions (West, North-West winds of intensity 7 Beaufort), while four foreigners were also located on a rocky shore opposite the sailing vessel.

The A/C vessel “ERATO” T.K. rushed to the said sea area. 14, which was carrying an officer of the Port Authority of Kythira as well as a patrol boat LS-EL.AKT., with whose help the four foreigners were rescued and the sailing boat was towed to the port of Kapsali, where they all disembarked 46 foreigners, of which 17 were men, 13 women and 16 minors, (seven girls and nine boys), lacking travel documents.

In the context of the preliminary investigation carried out by the Port Authority of Kythera with the assistance of officers of the Directorate of Security and Protection of Maritime Borders (D.A.P.THAS.) the involvement of four traffickers emerged, and they were arrested. The four traffickers were in command of the vessel, during the illegal transport, holding distinct roles in terms of the various actions-works on the vessel, which due to the excessive number of passengers was unseaworthy. The above sailing vessel was confiscated.

The Maritime Border Security and Protection Directorate, in collaboration with the Kythera Port Authority, analyzes and processes in depth all the evidence that has emerged and investigates the possible extension of the action of the members of the criminal organization in question to other cases, as well as their cooperation with other members of organized circles with the same or similar criminal activities.
