Although her term would normally end in June 2023, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen today called parliamentary elections for November 1.
Frederiksen, who has been prime minister since June 2019, was due to hold elections by June 2023 under Denmark’s electoral system.
But she accepted an ultimatum from a small party, forcing her minority government to call for an election before the first session of parliament on October 6.
Recent polls show that the “red bloc”, made up of several left-wing parties under the Social Democrats, would secure between 47% and 50% of the vote compared to 49% to 50% for the “blue bloc”, which includes the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party and three far-right nationalist parties.
In terms of seats, neither bloc has a majority in the national parliament without the support of MPs from Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
