Do you know what poutine is? Canadian dish featured at Canuck’s Poutinerie

by

If someone born in Brazil is “Brazilian”, someone born in Canada is “canuck”. “The term is slang Canadians use to describe themselves,” explains Luana Desie, a member of Canuck’s Poutinerie.

A mix of bar and restaurant, the place was created in 2011 around a specific dish: the poutine, which was born in Québec and is made with fries on a stick and in the skin, gravy (similar to wood, made with meat, chicken or vegetarian) and cheese curds (typical cheese, similar to Minas, only saltier).

This is the Achado da casa, which has three size options on the menu. The small one costs R$ 24 and is served in an individual portion with 300 grams; the medium, for two people, costs R$ 44 and weighs 700 grams; and the large one, for R$78 and weighing 1.2 kilograms, can accommodate up to four people.

The other partner is in charge of the kitchen, Carey Ann Evans, a legitimate “canuck” who has lived in Brazil for 16 years and was a participant in the third season of the show “Hell’s Kitchen Brasil”, on SBT. “She’s the one who makes the restaurant’s own cheese curds, as it doesn’t exist here,” explains Desie.

In addition to the classic version, the customer can enhance the recipe with ten suggestions, such as breaded chicken (R$ 12), bacon (R$ 10), shitake (R$ 12) or scrambled eggs (R$ 6). There are also reinterpretations of poutine with inspiration from other cuisines. This is the case with Thaitine, which costs R$ 44 and includes Thai sauce, made with almonds, coconut milk and herbs, plus coriander pesto and peanut chips.

To drink, the option is Canada Dry, a typical soda served in a mug of around 400 ml and that costs R$ 10. “It’s a kind of guarana with ginger, fermented and that looks like a kombucha”, says Desie. For dessert, you can’t miss maple syrup: the maple syrup that serves as the syrup on top of vanilla ice cream (BRL 14).
