Many residents and volunteers of Aitolikos hearing the shots raining down, they notified the competent Authorities and the Forestry Department, while also informing the Municipality since many birds fell victim to the hunters.
But the worst thing is that they also shot birds that live in the harbor and which have been bought with money from volunteers and citizens since they are rare species. One of them, a red goose in particular, washed up on the beach as the volunteers assumed it was injured by the hunters, since gunshot wounds were evident.
It should be noted that because the port is close to the Poros area, the birds move and arrive there in search of food. And it was not only that many birds were killed, but also that those in the harbor and the surrounding area fled in fear from the shots. As the volunteers estimate, they will return, but the damage is done.
The competent authorities and agencies will now continuously patrol the area to avoid similar actions by poachers.
It is a tragic situation since the port has reached its current form and is a pole of attraction, with a lot of effort and love for the natural environment. The would-be poachers must now reconsider going to this area to hunt, on the one hand because they will fall into the hands of the authorities and on the other hand because they must show sensitivity and support the effort being made in Aitoliko by people who have time and money.
It is noted that many schools visit the harbor and the students have the opportunity to see things up close that they might not have been able to observe if it were not for the Aitoliko Harbor.
