Today is an indelible day for Chania, with the completion of 56 years since the wreck of the ship “Heraklion” off the island of “Falconera” and 53 years since the crash of an Olympic Aviation plane in Keratea.
They lost their lives in both tragedies 314 peoplewith December 8 designated by a decision of the municipal council of the city, taken on December 9, 1969, as a day off for Chania.
On December 8, 1966, the ship “Heraklion”, which was sailing from the port of Souda to Piraeus, sank in the early hours of the morning, near the rocky island of Falconera, 23 nautical miles northwest of Milos, as a result – according to reports at the time – to find death 224 people. 47 of those on board were rescued from the wreck.
After three years, an Olympic Aviation aircraft flying the Chania-Athens route crashed in Keratea shortly before landing at Ellinikos airport, resulting in the loss of their lives 85 passengers and all five crew members.
In memory of the victims of the two tragedies, a memorial service was held in the morning at the small church of Agios Potapios in Chania and a memorial ceremony for the victims of the shipwreck at the monument, in “Talos” square, near the old port of the city.
