Greece’s position improved by four places due to the development of the innovation ecosystem
Greece ranks 43rd, among 132 countries, internationally, based on the output component, which is an indicator of innovation, improving by four positions. This results from the 3rd annual edition of the COMPASS Report of the Competitiveness Council of Greece, where the road map of policies and actions for the next day of the country is outlined.
The Minister of Finance, Christos Staikouras, pointed out that the responsibility of the state is to create the conditions for the development of innovation. “Our goal was and is to achieve strong and sustainable growth, increase the competitiveness and extroversion of the Greek economy, reduce the investment gap, create many good new jobs and strengthen social cohesion,” he noted.
The president of the Competitiveness Council, Simos Anastasopoulos, said in this regard: “…Through the 5 pillars that determine the competitiveness of the Greek economy, the decisive role of innovation is highlighted, which will allow the improvement of the indicators and also accelerate the recovery of the economy”.
The chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Competitiveness Council of Greece, Vassilis Kafatos, said about the Compass, “that in this 3rd edition, we attempt to deepen the role of innovation by recognizing the importance of the interconnection and exchange of knowledge and ideas, between the academic community, scientific research, businesses, start ups, government and society, as one of the main factors for gaining a competitive advantage and developing new dynamics in the country’s productive and business model”.
The general director of the Council, Dr. Venetia Koussia, said: “I am particularly happy and proud that PYXIDA is the result of the excellent cooperation between companies that are competitors in the professional arena: BCG, Deloitte, EY. We hope that this dream team will be a model for other projects and actions aimed at creating sustainable solutions. We all agree that prosperity needs pioneers!’
The exhibition
According to the Global Innovation Index, Greece ranks 43rd among 132 countries internationally from 47th place in 2001, marking an improvement of four places. The country’s improvement in the international ranking came from the output side as the specific innovation indicator saw a significant improvement of 11 places to rank 49th in 2022, which highlights the intensification of efforts to develop the innovation ecosystem. At the same time, however, Greece fell slightly by 5 places in the human capital and research index and in the sector concerning institutions, i.e. the stability of the political and business environment, it is ranked 69th from 51st place in 2021 mainly due to the deterioration of the ranking of the business environment. The Greek innovation ecosystem has a low performance in the field of market complexity as Greece, despite improving on an annual basis by 5 places, ranks 55th internationally.
Greece ranks 25th among the 27 EU member states in the 2022 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) report.
According to the relevant report of the European Commission, Greece has made satisfactory progress in recent years compared to other EU member states, which proves that Greece has begun to cover the lag in previous years in performance.
Progress is focused on elements of digital governance and digital skills, while the networks and digital intensity of small and medium-sized enterprises can be further improved.
In digital public services, the number of active users of eGovernment services (69%) increased from last year and is 4% higher than the EU average. The country also made progress in the population having at least basic digital skills, with 52%, and came very close to the EU average (54%).
