An original evening walk in decorated Athens, organized by the Municipality of Athens for the elderly housed in the Athens Nursing Home and for members of the municipality’s Friendship Clubs.

More than 120 people, who are unable to get out, move and have fun, toured with taxis on the streets of the festive city and admired the illuminated Athens up close.

The initiative implemented in collaboration with the Taxi Drivers Union of Attica (SATA) and the online show “TAXINOMOI”, gave our elderly fellow citizens the opportunity to enjoy – these first days of the year – a special ride which made them feel joy and optimism.

More than 70 taxi drivers took part in the action, who picked up the participants from three different points and transported them to the decorated Athens, passing through the main streets of the city such as Vasilissis Sofias, Panepistimiou, Omonoia Square, Stadiou and ending in the shining Syntagma Square. From the comfort of the taxi, the participants enjoyed the route, which throughout its duration was accompanied by motorcyclists of the municipal police of Athens.

In his statement, the Mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyiannis, said: “These people are our grandparents, they are our roots and “wings”. In the Municipality of Athens, we care about them and try to take care of them all year round and not only on holidays. Our main concern is that no one feels alone, no one without support and solidarity. Our Friendship Clubs are full of people with a zest for life, teaching us a valuable lesson as well. For this joy ride, the assistance of SATA and the taxi drivers of Athens was decisive, and we thank them very much because they generously provided their vehicles for such a noble and essential cause. We’ll do it again!”

For her part, the Deputy Mayor of Social Solidarity and Civil Society, Katerina Gagaki, emphasized in her statement: “It is a fact that this year the decorated Athens stole the show. Its shine and joy, however, belong to everyone and not only to those who have the opportunity to enjoy it every day while going to work or for a walk with our family. So today we became a hug and brought the warmth and optimism of the shining city to those who most need our thought, love, care and respect. To the people who raised us.”

The Municipality of Athens, these days, is even closer to the people supports, takes care of and empowers all year round with its actions and services. The goal is, every day of the year, to continue to offer an increasingly large hug, an “umbrella” of protection to all vulnerable groups and of course to the elderly.
