The Three-member North Aegean Court of Misdemeanors tried today the 24 Greek and foreign defendants for espionage and for other crimes, such as the illegal use of radio frequencies.

Without going into the substance of the accusations, he accepted the objections of the invalidity of the summons issued by the defense attorneys, because the foreigners were not served in their language, but where served, it was done in Greek. For the Greek defendants, the court accepted the objections of the lawyers regarding the vagueness of the indictment.

He re-sent the case to the Prosecutor’s Office, in order to draw up a new indictment, translate it into the language of the accused and serve it.

In essence, however, the charges of espionage against the specific Greeks and foreigners, members of Non-Governmental Organizations and independent volunteers who acted during the refugee-immigrant crisis, are time-barred due to the end of the prosecution for the offenses described on February 8.

Also, the defendants for illegal use of frequencies are exempted from the charge due to a change in the law, while the forgery case against two of the defendants was sent to be tried by the Three-member Misdemeanor Court due to lack of jurisdiction, but this procedure is also subject to a statute of limitations.

It should be noted that for some of the current defendants, offenses such as felony espionage are pending, but this process is still at the main investigation level.
