Traffic arrangements from 6am on Monday in the center and other areas – 1,000 police, helicopters and drones
The airspace of Attica and specific areas in the center and in the north are “sealed” with a NOTAM issued on Sunday by the Greek authorities, as part of the security measures for the funeral of the late King Constantine in the Metropolis and the transfer of the body for burial in Tatoi , ERT broadcasts.
The security measures, due to the presence of representatives of royal houses from all over the world and important persons, are draconian, while the traffic regulations will start from 6 am on Monday, while from 10 pm on Sunday, parking is prohibited in the area around from the Metropolis of Athens.
In the security measures meetings, it was decided to involve 1000 police officers, two helicopters and five drones. Inside the Metropolis will be found the 187 people who have invitations. In Tatoi the entrance of the world will be allowed until the entrance of Lefka as only those who have been invited will be able to find the burial place.
Monday’s schedule
The body of the former king will leave the First Cemetery shortly after 5:00 on Monday morning and arrive at the chapel of Agios Eleftherios at approximately 5:45 in the morning. From 06:00 to 10:30 anyone who wishes will be able to pay their respects.
Shortly before 12:00 the body will be transferred to the central church in the Metropolis of Athens for the funeral service of the archbishop of Athens Ieronymos and all the members of the Holy Synod, i.e. all 12 synodical Metropolitans.
The procession will last about an hour and at about 1:00 in the afternoon the body will depart for Tatoi. There will be a trisayo in the Church of the Resurrection. Burial will then follow in the royal cemetery next to the graves of his parents, as was the last wish of the deceased. Afterwards, the family will host a lunch at a central hotel in Athens.
Traffic regulations in Attica on Monday
Specifically, according to a relevant decision of the Attica Traffic Directorate:
Tomorrow, Monday January 16, 2023 and during the hours 06:00′ to 14:00′ there will be a temporary suspension of vehicle traffic on the following streets of the Municipality of Athens:
Metropolis along its entire length, Aiolou, in the section between Andrianou and Ermou streets, Ermou, in the section between Aiolou and Athena streets.
In addition, it is prohibited to stop and park vehicles on the above streets, starting today, Sunday, January 15, from 10:00 p.m. until tomorrow, Monday, January 16 at 02:00 p.m.
It is clarified that the traffic regulations may be extended or reduced as well as not applied depending on the prevailing traffic conditions, at the discretion of the head of Traffic measures.
Also according to the announcement of the Hellenic Police Headquarters, access to the chapel of Agios Eleftherios near the Metropolitan Church, where the body of the former king will be located, will be free from 06:00 am. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday January 16, while thereafter, at the request of the family, access to the Metropolitan Church will be restricted to family guests.
