This is another dangerous incident that was recorded on the morning of Thursday, January 5 in the sea area southeast of Farmakonissi when Turkish fishing boats were spotted fishing in Greek territorial waters. A port corps vessel was immediately notified, while the Turkish fishing vessels notified their own coast guard.

Initially, the Turkish vessel began circling the Greek vessel at a long distance, within Greek territorial waters. He then stopped and made the deceptive move to the sides of the Greek vessel. At the last moment the Turkish captain turned his steering wheel, got behind the Greek one and began to come dangerously close to ram it. Then the three Greeks of the Coast Guard who were on the boat started shooting in the air and drove the Turks away.

The announcement of the Coast Guard about the incident

After the incident was reported on January 5, the Port Authority issued the following statement:

“In the morning hours today, a patrol boat LS-EL.AKT., while performing an ordered service to identify three Turkish fishing boats that were fishing in the sea area southeast of Farmakonisi, within Greek territorial waters, was harassed by a Turkish vessel, which performed dangerous maneuvers in order to embolize him. Then the crew of the LS-ELAKT patrol boat fired warning shots in a safe area and the Turkish Aktaioros left the spot heading east towards the Turkish coast.”

“Slap” from the State Department in Turkey for the incident

On the occasion of this particular incident, there was also an intervention by the State Department on January 12. The US State Department has made it abundantly clear that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected and protected.

Responding to a question about the need for Turkey to respect the territorial waters of the islands located in the eastern Aegean, a representative of the US State Department reiterated the consistent US position that calls on all parties to refrain from actions that risk escalating tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

As he pointed out, “there is no change in the long-term position of the USA. We believe that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected and protected. As a matter of principle, we encourage all states to resolve maritime delimitation issues peacefully in accordance with International Law. While the United States generally does not take sides on other states’ maritime border disputes, we call on all parties to refrain from any actions that risk escalating tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. We continue to encourage our allies and partners to work together to maintain peace and security in the region and to resolve disputes diplomatically. We urge all our allies to avoid threats and provocative rhetoric that will only increase tension and help no one.”
