Last night’s collision of the two trains last night in Tempi – with at least 36 dead so far – is the biggest railway tragedy and one of the biggest in general in Greece.

What is chilling is the place where it happened, in Tempi, in the valley where two more accidents happened in the past that shocked the whole of Greece.
Also, in all 3 cases the victims were mainly young children.

PAOK fans in 1999

“The accident happened at the point of Evangelismos, a little below where the children of PAOK were killed,” said the deputy mayor of the municipality of Tempo, Giorgos Dontos.

On October 4, 1999, about two kilometers before Tempi, at 4:30 in the morning, six young PAOK fans lost their lives returning to Thessaloniki, after the match against Panathinaikos at OAKA.

The tragedy happened when the bus of S.F. PAOK Kordelio collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction.

The tragedy with the students from Makrychori in 2003

On the afternoon of Sunday, April 13, 2003, 21 students of the 1st Lyceum tragically died, while another 9 were seriously injured, in a horrific car accident.
The students from Makrychori Imathias were returning home from a trip to Athens.

The driver of a truck transporting novopan from Provatona Evros to Athens lost control and collided head-on with the school bus.

The accident happened at the 388th kilometer of the Larissa-Thessalonica national road, while a monument with the names and photos of the 21 dead students was erected at the scene of the tragedy.
