Professor Spyros Simitis died, at the age of 89, on Saturday, March 18, in Germany, where he lived for decades. He was the older brother of the former prime minister, Costas Simitis, and his death became known a little while ago with an announcement from the political office.

Spyros Simitis was considered the “father of personal data protection” in the European Union. A professor at the University of Frankfurt, he has written and worked for universities, research centers and international commissions, both in Germany and in the European Union and the United States. He contributed decisively to the formulation and implementation of the relevant legislation.

He was, by decision of the German cabinet, president of the “German National Council of Ethics and Ethics”. He also served as president and member of international and European committees for the Protection of Personal Data, such as at the European level of the “High Level Group of Experts on Social Rights”.

He was awarded honorary degrees by universities in both Europe and the United States. In Greece he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens.

Burial will take place in Germany.
