A bear caught in an illegal wild boar snare and in its desperate attempt to break free, chewed almost the entire trunk of the tree where the trap had been set, bleeding her gums.
The trapped animal was spotted by a passing shepherd outside the village of Pyrgetos in Larisa and he notified the 7th Hunting Federation. The Laboratory of Microbiology and Parasitology of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Thessaly and the Environmental Organization “Kallisto” were then informed, with which they collaborate in the LIFEARCPROM and LIFE Bear Smart Corridors projects for the brown bear.
Expert level, as part of the human-bear interaction protocol, approached the animal and sedated it. They even found, as stated in a related announcement from “Kallisto”, that during his confinement, the unfortunate animal was stressed and was chewing on the trunk of the tree where the noose had been installed, in his attempt to escape.
After sedation, it was found that he only had superficial wounds in the neck area caused by the wire rope, which were cleaned by the vets, without causing any serious concern. Followed by fitting a special radio collar and the revival of the bear.
According to “Kallisto”, the radio collar will provide useful data to verify the hypothesis of recolonization, by the bear, of areas from which it has disappeared in the recent past.
“The recolonization of areas by a large mammal, such as the bear, is a completely normal phenomenon and at the same time a process that develops very slowly. In the last 20 years, there have been several incidents of bears that appeared in the wider area of Olympus and then either returned to their former habitats or were killed illegally by humans,” the announcement emphasizes.
It is noted that the Pyrgetos incident is the 4th that the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Thessaly and “Kallisto” have jointly dealt with, after an incident in Florina (09/10/2022) and two incidents in Prespes (30/12/2019 and 2/4/2023), addressed within the LIFEARCPROM project. The use of wire noose is illegal whether as a means of trapping wild boar or as a means of preventing damage to agricultural or livestock production.
