The vessel has not emitted a distress signal – What the representative of the port Nikos Alexiou told SKAI
A sailboat with migrants was spotted on Friday afternoon off Pylos, with the Italian operations chamber having informed the Maritime Ministry’s Single Coordination Center for Search and Rescue which is monitoring his journey.
According to the latest information the vessel was located 100 miles northwest of Kyparissia. The vessel was very close to the limits of Italy’s search and rescue zone, it was only 16 miles away. Shortly before 8pm, it was announced that the ship with the migrants would pass into the territorial waters of the Italian authorities at around 9pm.
The Greek authorities are monitoring the situation. At the moment the vessel has not issued a distress signal, and is sailing normally.
Speaking to SKAI, the captain Nikos Alexiou, a spokesman for the Coast Guard, emphasized that vessels sailing in the area, cargo ships, are heading to the spot.
“The essential thing is that the vessel sails normally within the limits of the two lines (Italy – Greece) and there has been no danger. A helicopter is also going to verify the accuracy of the data” noted Mr. Alexiou.
“At the moment we do not have a clear picture of the number of migrants… There is no danger, they are not prevailing at the moment bad weather conditions» he clarified.
