Bad weather “Elpis” – Patoulis: Restrict travel

by

With heavy snowfall, from the northwest, the second wave of bad weather “Elpida” invaded Attica, early in the morning with snow appearing in the center of Athens, creating the first problems in the movement of vehicles and in general in transportation.

The first problems of entrapment of vehicles occurred on the side road of the National Road Athens-Lamia, at the height of Ag. Stefanou after the decision of the Traffic Police to close the national road for trucks, at the height of the Kalyftaki bridge.

The snowplows and the corresponding vehicles of the Attica Region have been operating in the work of release from the first moment, as informed by the Coordination Center of Operations, the Deputy Regional Minister of Civil Protection, Vassilis Kokkalis.

The full readiness of the entire Civil Protection mechanism is underlined by the regional governor G. Patoulis in APE-MPE, noting that with the use of the salt distributed in key points of a total quantity of 2.5 tons, the road network of the Region was kept open.

At the same time, he appeals to the citizens to restrict their movements and “great care during the next two days in order to avoid further problems of their entrapment and / or injuries”. He reminds that, through the call center 1110, the possibility of serving health cases is provided through the special units of release and immediate intervention that were recently recommended by the Region and the ISA, with special tracked vehicles staffed by medical staff. At the same time, and through the APE-MPE, the governor announced the availability of additional vehicles with 4×4 traffic to serve the needs and other critical events.

Mr. Patoulis points out that the arrival of the snow in Attica occurred much earlier (7.15 am) than the initial estimates of the meteorological service and that it is expected to intensify in the afternoon. Already, around 9.30 in the morning in areas of NE Attica, the phenomenon was manifested with a heavy snowstorm, making the action of the snowplows ineffective.

“At this time, the vigilance and coordination of all co-competent bodies is required in order to avoid problems and dangers for the lives of the citizens”, points out Mr. Patoulis, while congratulating the municipalities for the good cooperation and readiness they showed during the previous days and the night.

It is noted that during the night municipal and voluntary crews left salt in bags in various places and threw salt in the streets, in order not to freeze the snow, while with the care of the Region the access to hospitals and other buildings of key importance was kept open.
