A more accurate assessment of these areas will follow in the coming days.
An area of more than 617,000 hectares has been burned by midday today by the fire that broke out on Saturday in the area of Melia Evros, based on the latest high-resolution images of the Sentinel-2 environmental satellite, analyzed by the burned areas mapping service of the National Forest Fire Observatory ( EpaDaP), which is implemented by the Forest Management and Remote Sensing laboratory of the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment of AUTH. Correspondingly, an area of more than 50,000 acres has been consumed by the fire in the Tribe of Attica.
More specifically, on the maps published by APE-MBE (attached) it appears that the burnt areas for the areas of Fylis of the Prefecture of Attica and Alexandroupoli of the Prefecture of Evros until 12 p.m. (23/08/2023) amount to 50,057 and 617,571 acres respectively. The mapping was carried out with Sentinel-2 data (10m spatial resolution)
The AUTH Laboratory team notes, however, that “areas are largely covered by clouds and smoke and there may be intermediate areas that have been incorrectly assessed as burned.” In addition, it clarifies that “active fronts are observed in both fires, which are expected to significantly affect the final estimate of the burnt area”.
A more accurate assessment of these areas will follow in the coming days.
The National Observatory of Forest Fires (EpaFaP) is implemented by the Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing of the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment of AUTH, with the beneficiary of the General Directorate of Forests and Forest Environment of the Ministry of Environment and Energy. The working group consists of: Konstantinos Antoniadis, Nikos Georgopoulos, Michalis Sismanis, Dimitris Stavrakoudis, Argyris Lefakis, Elena Goudis and Alexandra Stefanidou, with Mr. Ioannis Geta, Professor of AUTH, as scientific leader.
