The ruined Mavromichalis mansion is located in Kastella of Piraeus, above Votsalakia beach, opposite the islet of Koumoundourou and is known to the locals as “the haunted house of Kastella”.

The specific residential complex is believed to have been the property of Kyriakoulis P. Mavromichalis, who was once a Greek Minister and later – for only a few months – Prime Minister of Greece, being the choice of King George I. Mavromichalis passed away in 1916 and since then a heavy shadow fell on the house for the following years.

Thirty years later the mansion came back to life but for a different purpose. It was the facilities deemed suitable to host three schools in succession. The first and indeed the most famous and now historic school that was hosted in the Mavromichalis Mansion was the Naval School of Hydra. Later, the Hydra Merchant Marine School was established in the Mavromichalis Mansion in Kastella. The Hydra Schools remained in Kastella until November 1949, i.e. for about seven years.

Since then, the building has not been inhabited and left to fall into disrepair.

Today, nothing reminds of the old glory that the impressive mansion had except the family coat of arms that can be seen on the main door.

The legends that accompany the house

Various scary stories and legends have accompanied the ruined mansion for years.

First, the house is said to be haunted by the spirit of a girl dressed in white who was once raped by a man.

Also, other rumors say that from the house of the Mavromichalayas, underground arcades start that end either in Hydra or in the islet of Stalida.

On May 7, 2021, a skeleton belonging to a 27-year-old French dancer whose traces have been missing since the end of August 2020 was found in a water tank by children playing.
