In the early hours of today, an Open Sea Vessel (APV) LS-EL.AKT., which was on a scheduled patrol, spotted an unmanned inflatable boat with a sufficient number of foreigners on board, within Turkish territorial waters.
The above boat overturned, resulting in all the occupants being thrown into the sea. Following the order of the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center of the Coast Guard Headquarters – Hellenic Coast Guard, the P.A.Th. L.S.-EL.AKT. rushed to the scene, whose crew collected twenty-two (22) people, four (04) of which were unconscious. Repeated calls were made via VHF to the Turkish Coast Guard about the existence of shipwrecks in their area of ​​jurisdiction with negative results.
A Turkish Coast Guard vessel appeared in the said sea area and moved near the wreck at high speed, while the process of collecting the wrecks was going on and then they refused to accept the rescued foreigners. Eighteen (18) foreigners were transported to the port of Mytilene and two (02) of them were transferred to the General Hospital of Mytilene “BOSTANEO”, in order to provide them with first aid, while the remaining sixteen (16) were transferred to the K.Y quarantine area .T. Kara Tepe “MAVROVOUNI”. The four (04) bodies were picked up by an EKAB ambulance and transferred to the Forensic Service of the North Aegean.
A preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Central Port Authority of Mytilene, while the inflatable dinghy sank. Searches continue for any missing persons.
