The donation of organs from a 64-year-old donor who was hospitalized in the ICU of the General Hospital of Zakynthos was successfully completed today and his brain death was diagnosed.
The lung and kidney grafts were airlifted to the Onassios Cardiac Surgery Center and the Hippocrates Hospital of Thessaloniki, respectively.
In a statement, the Administration of the General Hospital of Zakynthos expresses “its deepest condolences to the family of the donor and thanks for their generosity in offering life to our fellow human beings”.
Furthermore, the hospital management “thanks and congratulates the medical and nursing staff of the ICU and the Anesthesiology Department of our hospital as well as the nursing staff of the Surgery, for their participation and perfect response to the whole process. He also thanks the surgical teams from the Onassios Cardiac Surgery Center for taking the lungs and the University Hospitals of Patras and Ioannina for taking the kidneys.”
Finally, the general coordination was done by the Hellenic Transplantation Organization (HTO) and the process was carried out under the auspices of the Administration of the 6th Ministry of Health.
