It’s super crunchy, delicious snack and a favorite party appetizer
What you will need:
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt, divided
- 1/2 cup buttermilk, see above how to make your own*
- 1 egg
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 large onion, sliced and cut into rings
How to make it:
- You need 4 shallow bowls or deep plates.
- In the first one, mix the flour, paprika and ½ teaspoon of salt.
- In the second bowl, mix the buttermilk (or milk and vinegar/lemon juice) and egg, then add ¼ cup of the flour mixture from the first bowl.
- In the third, mix the breadcrumbs, ½ teaspoon of salt and the olive oil with a fork, until the oil is evenly distributed. You put half the dough in a quarter bowl.
- Dry the onions with kitchen paper to remove excess moisture. With a fork, dip the onion rings into the flour mixture, drop them into the buttermilk mixture and then dip them into the breadcrumb mixture.
- Place the onion rings in a single layer in the fryer basket. You can fit smaller rings inside larger ones, just make sure there is a gap between them. You cook at 200 degrees until they are golden and crispy, about 11-15 minutes. No need to turn the washers. Once ready, carefully remove the rings with a spatula or fork and serve.
*If you don’t have buttermilk, you can easily make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon/lime juice to ½ cup of milk.
