From Monday 25 to Friday 29 September 2023, the Armed Forces participated in the Special Forces – Special Operations Forces (ED – DEE) Exercise called “BALKAN SPIRIT – 23” held in Romania.

The Exercise is part of the overall planning of the GEETHA regarding the cooperation of the Armed Forces in the field of Special Operations with friendly and allied countries of the Balkan Peninsula, and contributed to the strengthening of the existing military cooperation, as well as to the increase of the interoperability and operational capabilities of the EDs – EU of the participating countries, in dealing with modern forms of threats in the sensitive geopolitical environment of the Balkans.

“BALKAN SPIRIT – 23” is a LIVEX/FTX (Live Exercise/Field Training Exercise) type exercise, and during its duration the following operational activities were implemented:

● Airborne and Airborne Enterprises.

● Close Quarter Combat (CQC) shots.

● Provision of First Aid on the Battlefield (Tactical Combat Casualty Care – TCCC).

Personnel from Bulgaria and Romania also participated in the Exercise. The Hellenic Armed Forces participated with 1 Special Operations Task Unit (SOTU) of personnel from the 5th Commando Squadron of the Special Warfare Command (DEP) of the Greek Armed Forces and the Paratrooper School (SCHAL) of the Special Forces Directorate (DET) of the GES.

The Greek participation in “BALKAN SPIRIT – 23” practically proves the active role of our country in the wider Balkan region, while at the same time it gives the opportunity to display the capabilities of the Greek Armed Forces in cooperation with the corresponding Balkan countries, with the common goal of their contribution to maintaining security and stability.
