Greek basketball was plunged into mourningas it was known a while ago, Giannis Ioannidis passed away.

He was 78 years old.

He was a former basketball player, coach and politician.

He is recognized as one of the top coaches in the history of Greek basketball: in total he won 12 championships and 6 cups.

It remains to this day coach who holds the record for the most Greek championship titles, having won 12 (one more than Zeljko Obradović), as well as the most wins in league matches (418 wins).

In politics, He was a Member of Parliament for Thessaloniki 1 of the New Democracy from 2004 to 2015 and served as Deputy Minister of “Culture” in the second Kostas Karamanlis government and Deputy Minister “Education and Religion, Culture and Sports” in the Antonis Samaras government.

He was born in Thessaloniki on February 26, 1945.

His father, Dimitrios, and his mother, Eleni (née Tsorlinis), come from the historic Gevgeli.

His great love was basketball, with which he was involved since his childhood, as a result at the age of 15, playing as a starter in the Aris team.

His position was playmaker.

Giannis Ioannidis was also there graduated in Agriculture from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and has worked as an agronomist at the Agricultural Bank.

He met great success as a coach, having served in Aris, Larissa, Olympiacos, AEK, but also in the national team.
