The news of the death of Giannis Ioannidis, one of the most important people that Greek sports gave birth to, spread sadness throughout Greece. “Xanthos” passed away at the age of 78 after serious health problems he had been dealing with in recent years.

But he will remain forever in the minds and hearts of the fans of Aris, Olympiacos of AEK, and those who love basketball, as without a doubt he was one of the persons who wrote many chapters in the history of Greek basketball.

Giannis Ioannidis will be buried tomorrow Friday in Thermi of Thessaloniki (17:00). Today (12:00) the memorial service will be held at Agios Ioannis Voulas, in order to say the last “goodbye” to relatives, friends and sports people in general, who will not be able to travel to Thessaloniki for the exodus procession.

Giannis Ioannidis carved his own history together with Galis and Giannakis in Aris, Fasoula and Johnson in Olympiakos, Prelevic and Anderson in AEK and many others, creating legendary and unforgettable moments for the sports fans.

He is the manager who holds the record for the most Greek championship titles to date, having won 12 (one more than Zeliko Obradovic), as well as the most wins in league matches (418 wins).

He was a man who left his “mark” on Greek sports with his contribution to the country’s basketball, but also with his explosive character.

The life and career of Yiannis Ioannidis

Giannis Ioannidis was born on February 26, 1945 in Thessaloniki, and his great love was basketball, which he was involved with since his childhood. At the age of 15, he played as a key player in the Aris team as a playmaker, until he guided the yellow and black team to consecutive successes from the position of coach.

He graduated in Agriculture from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and had worked as an agronomist at the Agricultural Bank.

He was a Member of Parliament for Thessaloniki, New Democracy from 2004 to 2015 and was Deputy Minister of Culture in the second Kostas Karamanlis government and Deputy Minister of Education and Religion, Culture and Sports in the Antonis Samaras government.

He has been awarded many awards, from the University of Thessaloniki, from higher educational institutions of the country, from legal and natural persons and many other bodies. Among his distinctions, a prominent place is held by his award from the University of Athens, which bears the title HOMO HELLENICUS.

This honorary title is awarded to personalities from all over the world who have served the Values ​​of Hellenism with their work and life, as well as to high political figures and heads of state, such as Tassos Papadopoulos, Vladimir Putin and Nicolas Sarkozy.

During his successful career, Yiannis Ioannidis “raised” 12 championships, 6 Cups while also appearing in the Final Four of the Euroleague.
