Yesterday, the Thassos port officers arrested 4 people – three citizens aged 51, 34, 32, as well as a 36-year-old foreigner – for illegal fishing of sea cucumbers or “sea cucumbers” as they are known.

Specifically, the 4 were arrested inside the boat at the island’s port, for having fished with diving suits/devices and illegally transporting more than the maximum number of “HOLOTHURIA SPP” allowed catches.

Particularly, they had caught 1680 instead of the 400 allowed per day per vessel.

It was also found that there was a residual size of holothurians, below the permissible limit of 180 grams.

Holothurai are an excellent delicacy in Asian countries, especially in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Korea, but also in Norway.

In countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia they are used for their therapeutic properties. They also make oils, creams and cosmetics.

It is even believed that animals contain all the fatty acids necessary for tissue repair.

The Thassos Port Authority, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, confiscated the diving equipment, while thea catch was returned to the sea while alive.
