Memories of the historic Gorgopotamos bridge bombing came alive this morning during the annual National Resistance event celebrated at the Gorgopotamos site opposite the historic bridge.

Few resistance fighters, but many more descendants of the resistance fighters, were there, despite the bitter cold, to honor those who 81 years ago sent a message to the whole world about the resistance of the Greeks, at the same time paralyzing the planning of the German occupation army to promoted in Africa.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport and Member of Parliament of Fthiotida, Christos Staikouras who represented the government, during his speech made special reference both to the historical events that culminated in the blowing up of the Gorgopotamos Bridge and to the messages of unity sent by the joint action of the guerrilla groups of Aris Velouchiotis and Napoleon Zervas in collaboration with the English saboteurs.

“We bow to the spirit, heroism and self-sacrifice of the fighters of the United National Resistance”, emphasized the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras, representing the government and the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, at the Panhellenic Celebration of National Resistance.

Christos Staikouras also noted the need for national unity, making special reference to the geopolitical developments that dominate the wider region. He underlined, meaningfully, the importance the government has given to the armaments to ensure national sovereignty.

“It may have been 81 years, but Gorgopotamos was, is and will be a shining example and a bright symbol for the path we must follow as a country, as a political system, as citizens,” Mr. Staikouras pointed out.

The Chr. Staikouras underlined that national unity is a dominant element for us to proceed from now on, in the international developments, as they have been recorded recently, noting that “81 years may have passed, but Gorgopotamos was, is and will be a shining example and a bright symbol for the path we must follow as a country, as a political system, as citizens” to conclude: “In recent years our country has been faced with many external challenges. Challenges in the geopolitical, economic, health, energy field. In these complex and turbulent circumstances, the Greek government responds wisely, decisively and dynamically. He acts with confidence. It strengthens the country’s economy and the homeland’s diplomacy. It shields and strengthens Greece. It upgrades its position, prestige, image on the international stage. It creates strategic and financial reserves, for a future that is prescribed liquid”

At the events for the 81st anniversary of the blowing up of the Gorgopotamos Bridge, all the parties declared their presence, whose representatives addressed greetings, as well as resistance organizations.

A representative of the Presidency of the Republic, the British Embassy, ​​as well as the mayor of Lamia, Thymios Karaiskos, and the deputy governor, Costas Apostolopoulos, addressed a greeting. The event closed with the laying of wreaths at the monument that exists in the event area.

It is worth noting that the events for the 81st anniversary of the blowing up of the bridge continue, as the historical walk in Gorgopotamos has been organized. It is a hike in the footsteps that the guerrilla units walked to reach the bridge. A walk organized by the Association Friends of the Museum of National Resistance and the Fthiotida section of the General Archives of the State, while the Museum of National Resistance in Lamia will also be open until late at night for public visits.

The events continue tomorrow, Monday and the day after Tuesday, where guided tours of students and schools are planned to the museum of National Resistance in Lamia and also to the exhibition on “Memories of the Resistance” organized at the Museum of Modern History of Lamia with the presence of photographer Nikos Kosmidis.

The students will have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the exhibition, but at the same time they will have the opportunity to come into contact with archival material from the development of the National Resistance in Roumeli.
