The 46-year-old is a mother, partner, worker, who experiences a very different everyday life, far from modern standards
The steps of the search, as she says, led her for the first time to Gavdos in 2003. At the southernmost tip of Europe, where you feel that something ends and something else begins, she herself found the place of her dreams, which she dared to do and place of the family he created.
THE Efi Georgaka she is a young woman, mother, partner, worker, who experiences a very different everyday life, far from the modern standards based on a materialistic perception of life. He was born and raised in Athens and decided to live permanently with her Gavdiotis husband on the island, in 2008. Speaking to APE-MPE, describing her life on this small piece of land, she says that only there she managed to find herself, after first consciously having to leave everything else. “My search led me to the southernmost tip of Greece and all of Europe. I arrived here and entered another dimension. My soul, which was so full of all these worthless material goods, which are forced upon us and made us believe to be necessary for our happiness, flew from it from the very first moments of my sojourn in this place, the a useless and unnecessary load of material goods that I was carrying as a burden, without knowing it” said Mrs. Georgaka, who today, almost 16 years since she settled in Gavdos, has a family with three children. Nikolas 14, Kelly 13 and little Damoulis 7 years old.
Having a different life in Gavdos, Efi Georgaka on the day of International Women’s Day, may not have had the choice to participate in a social event or a party with friends, however she managed to spend some hours alone in nature, walking towards Trypiti, which is her favorite spot, gave her the feeling of absolute power and freedom that made her remember, as she emphasizes, why she chose this place to build her life. “Every year this day for me is a day of reckoning and reflection. Learning to live without having what I once considered necessary to feel happy, my daily life, although it has many difficulties, seems simpler and I feel that it has more moments of happiness” said Efi Georgaka who, as she says, loved Athens , today it is only a place for a few days’ visit. “In Gavdos, time does not stress you, everything moves differently. Simplicity is everywhere, in our homes, in our cars, in our clothing, in the visits we will exchange with friends. Gavdos is not fashionable, but it has its own style, which is unique” said Efi Georgaka, adding that in this place you feel the freedom in every breath you take.
The everyday life of the 46-year-old woman however, it also has its strong difficulties, which are connected to the fact that there is no daily ferry connection on the island, mainly in winter, due to the weather and the prohibitions. “While we are not seriously concerned if there are some days when we will be left without some goods, our anxiety is nevertheless great if there is a need for medicines that our clinic will not have, or if someone needs hospital care” says Efi Georgaka who has needed to deal with the need to transport her child to a hospital in Crete, in the midst of prohibited sailing and other difficulties. “You learn to live and keep calm, to be proactive and try to be ready in the face of every difficulty,” said Ms. Georgaka to APE-MPE, who declared she was happy that her steps led her to this place, in which she succeeded to build a new personality, become another woman and attempt to be the mother she always wanted to be.
“I work hard in the house, I help the animals we have, in the tavern we maintain, I work in the ferry ticket office and I also like to deal with the public, through the Cultural Association. I’m not saying it’s a restful and carefree life, and since our homes don’t have too many luxuries, the fatigue is often intense,” she says, adding that as many times as her family members or friends from Athens have visited her, even if they cannot understand how she decided to change her life, in the end they manage to realize, that there she herself found her personal happiness.
Wife, mother, partner, worker, Efi Georgaka knows well that the choice of her life was this place, which to some may look like isolation especially in winter, but for her it is her own place, the place that made the greatest revolution for her. “The biggest revolution that could happen today is for each of us to change our lifestyle. To get away from everything unnecessary and get back close to nature. Man today has a great lack of contact with nature and this is making everyone sick” said Efi Georgaka, who again this year on International Women’s Day, took stock and wrote in her diary that “in this place, a sunny day can warm and illuminate, any cold and dark thought, of every woman who dares to believe in herself and live with courage”.
