This is the largest public project implemented in our country with a budget of 1.5 billion euros, which consists of fifteen new underground stations
About 340 thousand passengers expected to be served daily with Metro Line 4 which when it is completed, around 2029, will radically change the traffic in the Capital.
Two TBM tunnel boring machines are currently working. One from the Katehaki well heading towards the center to the Evangelismos Station and one from the Veikos well, also heading towards the Evangelismos Station. Each TBM or Metropondikas digs on a daily basis an average of 15 meters, placing 10-12 “rings” as the permanent concrete lining of the tunnel is called.
This is the largest public project implemented in our country with a budget of 1.5 billion euros, which consists of fifteen new underground stations: Alsos Veikou, Galatsi, Helikonos, Kypseli, Courts, Alexandras, Exarchia, Academy, Kolonaki, Evangelismos, Kaisariani, University Campus, Ilisia, Zografou and Goudi, approximately 13 km long tunnel and a contractual completion time of eight years from the signing of the contract.
It includes a new Operation Control Center (OCC), with the prospect of integrating the operation control of the existing Lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 as well as future automatic new trains and the Tram, as well as a new maintenance and repair building for the new trains, which will be placed in available space at the Sepolia depot.
The supply of 20 trains of the Alstom Metropolis series is foreseen. Following the example of Thessaloniki, the trains will be the first in the Athens system to operate super-automatically, without a driver and with their movement controlled by the Control Center.
The specifications for Line 4 follow new standards and incorporate new technologies, as many requirements and procedures have changed, based on experience from previous projects as well as from the Thessaloniki project.
In total, it is estimated that with the operation of the New Line 4 of the Athens Metro, approximately 340,000 passengers are expected to travel daily, while car trips are expected to decrease by approximately 53,000 per day, the release of carbon dioxide is estimated to decrease by 318 tons/day , as well as 1,216 megawatt hours of energy will be saved.
From Metro Line 4 the application of the BIM model begins in Greece (Building Information Modelling). An innovative platform, supported by the European Union and part of the reforms of the Recovery Fund. It covers the gaps between the designer and the builder of the project, contributing on the one hand to the correct technical and constructional completion of the projects and to the saving of significant resources in terms of the final cost of the projects, which is also one of the most important problems in Greece.
In addition, following the Memorandum of Cooperation between ANAPLASI ATHINAS SA, HELLENIC METRO SA, the Municipality of Athens and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the architectural competitions for the entire public space that is affected and reshaped and for the final form that – after the completion of the project – the three emblematic squares of Kolonaki, Exarchia and Kypseli, as well as the surface areas in front of the “Academia”, “Evangelismos”, “Alexandras” and “Dikastiria” stations will take.
The aim is to form a unique aesthetic identity in each of the squares and stations that are created, pointing out that it is not just about the construction of Metro stations, but also about an overall intervention in the wider environment of the city, in particular the upgrading of the urban public space , of the wider environment, based on modern requirements and the principles of the bioclimatic-environmental designer, fully accessible to people with disabilities, aiming to create a safe, accessible and pleasant public space for everyone.
This memorandum ensures the protection and care of the public space, but also the environmental and green direction of the project, since after its completion the greenery will return to its original form and quantity and in addition the transplanting of over 1,300 trees will be financed and the additional planting of 2,700 trees in the city, which has already begun.
