The European Space Agency (ESA) confirmed that the meteorite was a fragment of a comet traveling at an incredible speed of around 161,000 km/h (100,000 mph).

It is estimated to have burned up over the Atlantic Ocean at an altitude of about 60 kilometers (38 miles). There have been reports that it may have fallen near the towns of Castro Daire or Pinheiro, however ESA estimates that the chance of finding meteorites is very low, as the meteorite likely disintegrated before reaching the Earth’s surface.
