Facing felony charges as guilty of arson who caused huge destructive fires in August 2021 in Vilia Attica, is expected to be tried by the Mixed Jury Court on June 25, former Deputy Mayor Civil Protection of the area.

The trial of the former Deputy Mayor, which after an interruption is expected to start on the 25th of the month, concerns the catastrophic fires of August 16 and 23, 2021 that started in areas of the Municipality of Mandra-Idyllia.

The first fire burned for days in a front that reached areas in the municipalities of Elefsina, Megara and Loutraki, while both fires left behind huge destructions in houses, stables and warehouses, as well as in virgin forest lands.

The accused, arrived before the Justice after a coordinated investigation by the Fire Department and the Police, which concluded that the former elected official and known in the area for his involvement with the public, is the perpetrator of arson in both cases.

In accordance with will of the Council of Misdemeanors that refers him to trial, the former responsible for Civil Protection issues of the municipality that was severely affected by the fires in question, is the one who caused the destruction as the culprit of arson.

In a statement, the defense attorney for the Class, who represents victims in the trial of the former Deputy Mayor, Panagiotis Balaktaris, states:

“Greece has suffered, most often with tragic consequences, from arson and it is a demand of justice and society, when the legal conditions are met, that the guilty, the perpetrators, be brought before the courts and punished. Arson is a crime that threatens the whole society and must be treated as such”.
