The biggest challenge for automakers when launching a new electric model is battery life and capacity. Two parameters that in practice prove to be important, as they are the ones that can give the impetus to increase sales of electric cars.
At present, the autonomy of electric cars is such that they do not allow long journeys. For example, the Athens-Thessaloniki route cannot be traveled by an electric car without stopping. Supply is important and the time required to recover the required energy levels plays an important role. In this area, electric car battery developer StoreDot has unveiled bold plans to build batteries capable of charging quickly and delivering large amounts of electricity in minutes.
Israeli tech startups plan to develop a new battery-powered design that can be charged for up to 100 miles in just two minutes. This fast charging technology will be commercially viable for mass production, according to the company plans in 2032.
To facilitate these incredibly fast charging speeds, StoreDot states that batteries will not use the lithium-ion batteries currently used overwhelmingly in electric and hybrid cars. Currently, lithium-ion batteries are cheaper and easier to produce in higher numbers than more expensive solutions, such as solid state technology. The same company claims that in 2024 it will produce batteries that will be charged to offer 100 miles on charge in just five minutes. It also seeks to introduce a production-ready solid state design that requires only a three-minute charge for 100 miles of autonomy.
StoreDot claims that ultra-fast battery technology is being tested by several automakers. Honda is already testing development cars with solid-state battery packs, as is US start-up Fisker, which says it may launch an electric car with solid-state batteries from next year.
