The last 10 tourists who were left in the Samaria gorge after Wednesday’s tragedy were also freed and had even spent the night there.

The 10 tourists reversed the route and at noon on Thursday, they went back to Xyloskalos.

“Ten people who remained in the old settlement of Samaria came out of the canyon. The people were hosted by the forest rangers and came to Xyloskalos to escape. They stayed there for safety reasons, because they were delayed on the trail and they stayed there, because otherwise they would have been on the trail all afternoon and both the workers and them would have been in danger. We partially concealed what had happened, so that they could have a quieter night. We didn’t tell them that night,” Alcibiadis Pentarakis, employee representative of the Samaria National Park, told zarpanews.gr.

“We had no information about the bad weather from any service. We saw the phenomenon at the last moment and 1071 people had already entered the gorge. We tried to be safe. Unfortunately, however, a stone that fell from above brought the tragic result. There is also a shortage of doctors in Agia Roumeli. There was a tourist doctor there, but the bleeding was uncontrollable and the German woman died,” he added.
