Heavy snowfall occurs from the early morning in many areas of Central Macedonia, over 300 meters, including in mountainous areas around Thessaloniki. Snowflakes fall in Lagadas, Chortiatis, Asvestochori, while sleet is recorded at intervals in the lowlands of the prefecture. In the Municipality of Lagada the snow falls densely and all the competent services are on foot in order for the main road network to remain open, as mentioned in an announcement of the Municipality.
Due to the snowfall, the traffic of all vehicles on the provincial roads Chortiati-Agios Vassilios and Melissochori-Oreokastro has been stopped and the Traffic Police recommends drivers to be especially careful. Anti-skid chains or special type tires are needed for drivers moving in Imathia, from the 79th to the 98th kilometer of the old national road Veria – Kozani (via Kastania), on the road network to the ski resorts of Selio and 3/5 Pigadia. In the prefecture of Kilkis, from the 10th kilometer of the provincial road Goumenissa – Livadia. In the prefecture of Pella, from the 20th kilometer of the provincial road Arnissa to the ski center of Vora.
Chains are also necessary in parts of the network of Halkidiki, specifically from the 65th to the 90th kilometer of the national road Thessaloniki – Ierissos (Paleochora to Stratoniki), from the 70th to the 85th kilometer of the old national road Thessaloniki – Ierissos (via Taxiarchi), on the provincial roads Paleochori – Agios Nikolaos and Neochori – Barbara.
Which schools will remain closed
After communication with the principals of the school units, due to the snowfall, with the decision of the mayor of Lagada, Ioannis Tachmatzidis, not all the school units in the Municipal Unit of Lahana will operate. In the Municipal Unit of Sochos, the school units in the Local Community of Sochos and in the Local Community of Kryoneri will not operate, while in the local community of Askos, the schools will operate normally. In the Municipal Unit of Vertiskos, the school units in the Local Unit of Ossa will remain closed, while the Special School of Lofiskos will operate normally.
In the above areas, the respective KDAP and Kindergartens will remain closed.
For precautionary reasons, as the Municipality of Aristotle informs, today, the school units of all levels and kindergartens will remain closed in the communities of Arnaia, Stanou, Paleochori, Neochori, Varvara, Megali Panagia, Stagiron, Stratoniki. In the other Communities, the operation of the schools will be carried out normally.
Primary and secondary schools will remain closed only in the Local Community of Rhizomes in the mountains of the municipality of Veriaaccording to the press office of the Municipality of Veria.
In the meantime, there was a power outage from the early hours of the morning in parts of the Panorama and Chortiatis areas, due to a fault in a medium voltage line. HEDNO workshop is on foot to repair the damage.
