The EU inter alia calls on Greece to submit data on compliance with recycling targets under the Waste Framework Directive
The European Commission, in its regular set of infringement decisions, initiates legal proceedings against member states that do not comply with their obligations under EU law. These decisions, which cover different sectors and different EU policy areas, aim to ensure the correct application of EU law for the benefit of citizens and businesses.
The main decisions taken by the Commission are listed below classified by policy area. In addition, the Commission decided to close 47 cases, in which outstanding issues with the Member States concerned were settled without the Commission having to initiate further proceedings.
In this context, it calls on Greece to submit data on compliance with the recycling targets in accordance with the waste framework directive.
Specifically it states:
The European Commission decided to initiate an infringement procedure by sending a warning letter to Greece [INFR(2024)2228] due to non-compliance with the Waste Framework Directive [οδηγία 2008/98/ΕΚ για τα απόβλητα, όπως τροποποιήθηκε με την οδηγία (ΕΕ) 2018/851]. The Waste Framework Directive is the EU’s framework legislation aimed at preventing or reducing the generation of waste, limiting the overall impact of resource use and improving the efficiency of this use, key elements in the transition to a circular economy and to ensure the long-term competitiveness of the Union. To verify compliance with the recycling targets set out in the Directive, Member States must submit data on the preparation for reuse and recycling of waste, as set out in the implementing rules [εκτελεστική απόφαση (ΕΕ) 2019/1004 της Επιτροπής]. Greece is the only Member State that has not submitted relevant data for the years 2020, 2021 and 2022. For this reason, the Commission is sending a letter of formal notice to Greece, which now has two months to respond and correct the deficiencies pointed out by the Commission. The Commission, if it does not receive a satisfactory answer, may decide to send a reasoned opinion.
