The huge queue formed by interested parties outside a house for rent in the area of Katsamba in Heraklion, Crete, testifies to the huge housing problem that exists throughout the country. Even more so when the rent price is reasonable.

The owner of the house, Mr. Nikos spoke on Thursday morning to ANT1 about the issue and how difficult a position he was in when he was asked to decide who would be the lucky winner.

The specific apartment that became available was 80 square meters and the rent was 400 euros, which made it even more attractive.

“It’s a normal house. This is the reasonable price that should have been rented,” he said. He even said that he received the first phone call just 2.5 minutes after the rental ad was posted, while those interested were calling the ad’s phone until 03:00 in the evening.

As the owner said, it is an 80 square meter apartment in a twenty-year-old apartment building. “Seventy people were waiting outside the house” while from the large crowd that was created he commented that “the neighborhood thought we were having a funeral”.

Mr. Nikos also said that the prospective tenants offered him rents of even one year in order to entice him to choose them.

“The house was seen by 100 different families,” he pointed out. “They offered me one year’s rent, they offered me more money” he added concluding: “I rented the house at the price I asked for without a guarantee”.

When asked who the lucky tenant was, he replied that the choice was made after a lottery. In the end, a family with two seven-year-old children who had been forced to live separately for four years in other homes was lucky.

“The house was taken by a family with twins who was most in need. All these years they were looking for a house and lived separately for four years, the father with one child in his paternal house and the mother with the other child in her paternal house” concluded the owner of the house.
