More relevant than ever, ‘A Dangerous Dynasty: House of Assad’, the BBC’s revealing documentary, goes inside the hideouts of the Assad dynasty starring Bashar Al Assad and his wife Asma.
The three-episode series comes exclusively to SKAI on Tuesday, December 17 at 11:15 p.m. and on Wednesday, December 18 at 9:00 p.m. The rise and fall of Assad, the dark roots of the regime, the games on the geopolitical chessboard, the appointed end. Rare footage and authentic accounts from those closest to them weave the story of a controversial couple who rose to prominence as a modernizing force but ended up heading a brutal regime accused of war crimes.
Tonight at 23.15, in the first episode, the acquaintance and love of the couple in England when Bashar was continuing his medical studies in London. Soon after, the second episode of the series finds Bashar Al-Assad as the president of Syria. His glamorous wife is first lady, but problems abound for both of them. Bashar’s family members do not like Asma and try to keep her out of the limelight. The President of the United States calls Syria “part of the Axis of Evil” and the United Nations
they issue decrees that Bashar’s family insists on ignoring.
Soon, the Assad family is at the center of a murder investigation after a deadly explosion in a foreign leader’s car. Bashar and
the Asma try to maintain the illusion of normality and legitimacy and are photographed at the opening of the Damascus Opera House,
at the same time that 2 mass murders of prisoners are being organized in Syrian prisons on a scale the world has never seen before. The sequel can only be explosive.
On Wednesday 18 December at 21.00, in the third episode of the series, the civil war in Syria erupts in all its intensity. Bashar Al
Assad has completed a decade at the helm of his country, while Asma is enjoying her role as first lady by organizing charity events and “democracy seminars” in schools. While Asma is being photographed for Vogue, the Arab Spring is bringing protests to Syria as well.
Bashar will have to decide whether to give in to the people’s demands for more freedom or to follow faithfully in the footsteps of his authoritarian father. The brutality of the subsequent developments shocked the entire globe. While the chaos of civil war covers
across Syria, ISIS is emerging and Bashar is one step away from completely losing control of his country. Exactly that one
moment a controversial ally comes to the fore, who helps him turn the war developments in his direction. But for how long, it will
keep this?
