On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Natura 2000 network, the Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Mr. Virginia Sinkevitsos, announced today the winners of the awards Natura 2000. Six works were awarded from Austria, Bulgaria, HellasPortugal, Spain and a cross-border project in Germany, Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
Announcing the winners at a ceremony in Brussels, Commissioner Sinkevitsus said: “The protection and restoration of the EU’s natural heritage and biodiversity is vital to mitigating it. climate change, to adapt to it and to preserve life on Earth for future generations. In the last 30 years, thousands of professionals in its field environmental protection, volunteers and organizations work for the protection and restoration of nature, so that it continues to offer us benefits. Thanks to these people, the network is so successful today. “In competitions, the prize always goes to a winner, but today we should all feel like winners, because when nature is protected, we all benefit.”
The Natura 2000 Awards recognize successful examples of nature conservation throughout EU and raise awareness of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas, which is one of Europe’s great successes. The awards include the following categories: land protection (winner this year is Greece)communication (Bulgaria), socio-economic benefits (Cantabria, Spain), citizen vote (Austria), cross-border cooperation, while this year another category was added: conservation of the marine environment (Portugal).
The sound management of the Natura 2000 network is at the heart of the ambitious objectives of the protection and restoration of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030, which has aims to put biodiversity on a recovery path by 2030benefiting people, climate and the planet.
