The proposal made by Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Evi Christofilopoulou to head the Independent Authority for the Protection of Personal Data has already caused a stir in PASOK, as well as a new rift in Charilaou Trikoupi’s relations with Piraeus Street. The prime minister has known the former minister since the time they “cohabited” in the Administrative Reform portfolio.

Evi Christofilopoulou stated from the first moment to her interlocutors that the proposal was honorable and she accepted it by putting the asterisk of consultation with PASOK from the moment that a broad consensus is required for her election. In any case, the term of office of the current head of this Authority, Constantinos Menoudakou, is coming to an end.

The background is rich and the versions of what finally happened are different. The side of Ms. Christofilopoulos claims that in the communication she had with Nikos Androulakis via Zoom, as he was sick with coronavirus at the time, she initially received a “yes” despite any objections of a “communicative nature” she had expressed. Party sources claim that in the discussion she had with Nikos Androulakis at the end of June, no green light was given for her candidacy, since a consultation with K.O. According to information, 6-7 text messages were allegedly sent by Evi Christofilopoulou to the mobile phone of the president of PASOK without any response. To the president of the Parliament, the information states, that it was announced that “there is no agreement”. Mrs. Christofilopoulou conveys her displeasure with the development, asking for an explanation as to why her party does not support her. “Do they really have a problem?” he is reported to be asking.

In Harilaou Trikoupi, they are suspicious of the moves made by the government camp. They see an attempt to “bleed” the leadership of PASOK by the ND. They are recent, after all, two very important approaches that have been made. To Anna Diamantopoulou who was a candidate for the post of OECD secretary general on behalf of the country, but also to Stavros Beno who was put in charge of the reconstruction committee of Evia. In the last few months, the scenarios had flared up regarding the exploitation of another former top executive of PASOK, the former Minister of Energy, Yannis Maniatis. The period is pre-election and in Harilaou Trikoupi there are officials who see an attempt by the government to penetrate the center, part of which PASOK is winning again after the election of Nikos Androulakis to the presidency.

It now seems very difficult for PASOK to support the candidacy of Evi Christofilopoulos, when the matter comes to the Conference of Speakers of the Parliament. It is recalled that a 3/5 majority is required in order to be approved.
