The president of PASOK-Movement for Change argues that it is the State’s duty to ensure that there will never be a new “Eye” again and underlines the need for a new Civil Protection model
The president of PASOK-Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakisin his statement on the four years since the tragedy in Mati, describes July 23 as a “black anniversary”.
“Four years have passed since the tragedy in Mati and our thoughts will always be with our 103 fellow citizens, who so unjustly lost their lives, their families and the hundreds affected, whose lives changed drastically. A place of recreation, relaxation and carelessness turned in just a few hours into a fiery inferno due to criminal mistakes, lack of a rescue plan and malicious manipulations“, says the president of PASOK-KINAL, in his statement.
He points out that “today, with the resources we have from the Recovery Fund but also with the common instruments, provided to the member states through the single EU civil protection mechanism, RescEU, we have the possibility to create an integrated civil protection plan with a clear division of responsibilities between the authorities involved».
Mr. Androulakis argues that it is the duty of the State to ensure that there will never again be a new “Eye” and underlines the need for a new Civil Protection model.
“The natural disaster response model should become part of a solid national strategy and be modernized by adopting best practices that other countries have followed in recent years. Only in this way will we protect human life and the environment“, he specifically states.
