by

“It is a pleasure to welcome the Greek Prime Minister to Russia. It is symbolic that the visit coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution. “I will remind you that Russia supported the Greek revolution from the beginning and was the first to recognize the Greek state,” said Russian President Vladimir Putin, in joint statements after a private meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Sochi, Russia.

Vladimir Putin described the talks with the Greek Prime Minister as comprehensive and effective and noted that they had adopted the complex Greece-Russia action plan for 2022-2024 and this reflects the nature of bilateral relations, as he underlined.

Furthermore, the Russian President stated that the Greek-Russian relations are significantly strengthened. “In the first 9 months of this year, bilateral trade increased by 56%,” he said. The Russian companies have a lively interest for investments in Greece and we expect the same response from the respective Greek ones, he pointed out.

He also expressed the hope that Greece would support Russia’s candidacy for the EXPO 2030 International Exhibition.

He went on to say that Russia supplies more than 40% of Greece’s energy needs. “Russia is fulfilling its obligations to Greece and the EU and will continue its uninterrupted supply of natural gas,” he added.

He recalled that Russia arrested in the summer by sending firefighters to Greece to extinguish the large fires.

In addition, Vladimir Putin informed about Russia’s decision “to hand over to the Hellenic Republic the archives of the Nazi Jewish communities that had been found in Moscow.”

He also announced that the year of History of Greece and Russia is extended until the middle of 2022.

He noted that with Mr. Mitsotakis they referred to issues of Russia-EU relations, in the Balkans, and in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Regarding the Cyprus issue, the Russian President said that “we support the solution of a bi-zonal and bi-communal federation”.
