“Such irresponsible behavior and at the same time the misdemeanors of Turkey from whose shores these boats started unfortunately lead to tragedies,” said the government representative.
The government representative Yannis Oikonomou, starting the briefing for the political editors, expressed his sadness for the tragic events in our seas that led to deaths and put too many people at risk.
As he said, “the Greek authorities, the Coast Guard, the Police, the Army, the Navy, the Fire Brigade under particularly adverse weather conditions saved human lives. They were rescuing people who were thrown by unconscious traffickers into the raging waters of the Aegean, on boats that do not meet any safety standards. Such irresponsible behavior and at the same time the misdemeanors of Turkey from whose shores these boats started unfortunately lead to tragedies.
Despite the organization and the heroic efforts of the personnel of the Greek authorities, which continue, it is mathematically certain that we will mourn victims as long as Turkey does not do what is required by the international conventions it has signed and international law”.
Mitsotakis in Prague
He then mentioned that the Prime Minister is already in Prague, as the European Political Community Summit is taking place today and the European Council’s extraordinary session tomorrow.
In the opening Plenary Session of the Synod, Ukrainian President Zelensky will make an intervention via video conference, and the Prime Ministers of the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Norway and Albania will also speak.
“It is noted that the Summit of the European Political Community has been structured around leaders’ discussions at various thematic tables. 11 leaders will participate in each panel, both from EU member states and from third countries that have been invited.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will co-chair a thematic roundtable on energy, economy and climate change. That is, the topic with perhaps the greatest weight in the most critical international situation, but also in general. A topic that is indicative of the interest that Greece’s initiatives and proposals have caused for the energy crisis, the economic consequences of the crisis and climate change, proposals such as the imposition of a price ceiling on the wholesale price of natural gas. Kyriakos Mitsotakis with his public interventions and policies has established himself in the international spotlight as an influential political figure in this kind of agenda.
The German Chancellor as well as the Prime Ministers of Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Bulgaria, Norway and Serbia will speak at the same table.
Extraordinary session
Tomorrow Friday, at the extraordinary Summit at the informal meeting of the European Council, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will inform the EU leaders about the escalation of provocative Turkish rhetoric, as well as about Ankara’s recent agreement with the government of Tripoli and the invalid Turkish-Libyan memorandum, highlighting the dangers of Turkish behavior for security and stability in the region, in the midst of a particularly critical international juncture.”
Mr. Economou emphasized as extremely important the fact that shortly before the start of the Prague session the President of the Commission sent a letter to the heads of state and government of the 27 EU member states in which he essentially adopts the proposals of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the imposition of a ceiling on the price of natural gas at the TFT hub as an emergency measure to address the energy crisis.
It was mentioned in the Prime Minister’s comment yesterday that this move is a very positive step in the right direction and will help reduce the burden on consumers on multiple levels.
“Europe must not allow Russia to use energy as a weapon to destabilize European societies,” he also said, citing a position repeatedly expressed by the prime minister.
He also added that not only the position but also the rhetoric and the arguments that the Greek government proposed in a timely manner are adopted and the Greek Prime Minister is fully vindicated.
“Greece provides solutions to critical impasses” he emphasized, pointing out that, as during the pandemic, he was a pioneer in the development of proposals and ideas for overcoming common European problems.
He then referred to specific recommendations of Greece such as the Recovery Fund (together with 8 other countries), the exceptions from the state aid rules with the aim of directly supporting businesses in the crisis, the European certificate for covid-19, the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance with self-test, the imposition of a ceiling on the European natural gas market which today this proposal is adopted by the president of the Commission.
He also made reference to the proposal of the European mechanism for the recovery of energy companies’ surpluses, which has already become a European regulation, as well as the imposition of extraordinary taxation on energy companies for the first months of the energy crisis.
The government has reversed the negative image of Greece in the EU and on the world stage, with moves like these, he said, upgrading the country something that is also reflected in foreign policy, and our national defense and investments and Tourism.
The plan to support society and the economy will continue as long as the crisis lasts, he assured, as the Prime Minister also said at the meeting of the National Assembly of the ND.
