As soon as she climbed the stairs of the government building and met Draghi, the Italian politician shook his hand and told him “it’s definitely an emotionally charged moment”. The outgoing head of government and the new prime minister had a detailed conversation lasting one hour and twenty-five minutes.

“This government team will serve the country with a sense of responsibility and pride. Now we all dedicate ourselves to work”Ms. Meloni said in her twitter post.

At the same time, he responded to a message from the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stressing: “Many thanks, Madam President. We are willing and ready to work together to strengthen the EU’s resilience in the face of common challenges.”

Addressing, always via Twitter, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, Meloni added: “We are ready to do our best, with the 27 European nations, which work together with the goal of a better Europe and coexist in favor of freedom and democracy”.

Today is also the first meeting of the cabinet of the new Italian government, with Giorgia Meloni as prime minister.

Mario Draghi led Italy for twenty months. Today he left the government building Palazzo Kitzi on foot, after was warmly applauded by all employees.

Georgia Meloni’s message to Kyriakos Mitsotakis
