“We all understand that this is a volatile situation, unfortunately the price of natural gas and oil has become extremely volatile. I think that at the present time it is more due to the fact that there was an agreement in principle by the European leaders on the position of the ceiling on natural gas, so that even if it has not been defined at the level of technical details, I think that it acted as a deterrent to the increase in prices” the minister emphasized of State, Giorgos Gerapetritis for the reduction in the price of natural gas that occurred.
“Subsidies will exist as long as there is a need. The prime minister has pledged that the strengthening of Greek society will be permanent. Therefore, in any case where we judge that the prices are prohibitive, especially for the most vulnerable households, then we will intervene creatively” he added. “I think they are marginally too high so that a public boost is needed,” he said of whether today’s prices are prohibitive.
Regarding food, Mr. Gerapetritis said that “the prices we see on the supermarket shelf are prices that have been formed over time and have to do with the supply chain. So it makes sense that there would be a time lag. Depending on the prices, there should also be a corresponding intervention on the part of the state, in order to contain these prices usually at their source”.
He pointed out that for the time being there has been no thought for Fuel pass 3 adding that “the interventions, which are made to strengthen the most vulnerable categories, should be measured and targeted, because we do not know how long they will last and because possibly a asymmetry can lead to very negative consequences.”
Also, the Minister of State, Giorgos Gerapetritis underlined that the example we have seen of emptying the coffers during the pre-election period, in Greece in 2022-23 we will not see it. “We will have a very measured policy, what has been announced by the prime minister has already been legislated and is gradually being implemented. There is not going to be any retreat from what has already been announced, and on the other hand, anything we do will not endanger the country’s fiscal balance,” he said, stressing that “we will not see memoranda or similar commitments with the current government.”
Referring to the investment grade he said the government believes we can get it before the elections. “It is a very high goal, in this direction we have received a series of positive evaluations from all the houses, positive evaluations from all the supervisory reports. We believe that we can and are entitled to get the investment grade that will essentially bring Greece to a state of fiscal normality after 12 years,” he noted.

In addition, Mr. Gerapetritis mentioned that the elections will be held at the end of the four-year period with the 2021 census, noting that from a first estimate it appears that there will not be major changes, but rather small changes in the electoral districts. “The nationwide elections are not going to be affected by the time of the elections” he added.
Finally, regarding the extension of territorial waters south of Crete, the Minister of State stated: “Greece will exercise its right to extend territorial waters south of Crete whenever it deems it appropriate. It reserves its absolute sovereign right to exercise it at the appropriate timing. Absolutely no rights are going to be granted and on the other hand there is a very structured foreign policy, which has strengthened the country’s international position and we will continue to exercise this, without concessions and with only our national interests in mind.”
