“We follow their progress with joy, we feel proud and we wish each one of them progress and happiness,” the President of the Republic wrote, among other things

The President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou states that she is proud of the second and third generation expatriates she met during her visit to Germany, speaking of “Greeks with a solid European conscience, self-confidence, vision, expectations”.

With her post on Facebook, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou emphasizes that “established professionally and socially in a foreign country, they maintain their emotional bond with Greece, grafting the society that welcomed them with their spiritual vigor, indefatigable industriousness and inexhaustible creativity” . At the same time, he points out that “we follow their progress with joy, we feel proud and we wish each one of them progress and happiness”.

In particular, in her post, the President of the Republic states:

“Many decades have passed since our compatriots left their country by the thousands, with a suitcase in hand, and looked for work in Germany, not knowing the language and not suspecting what they would meet there. Almost a million women and men went abroad, cheap labor for the factories and construction sites, enduring the deprived, cut off from the homeland, degraded daily life of the guest worker, the guest worker without full rights, with the only light the envelope with the weekly and the hope of the return. And with their hard work they contributed both to the advancement of their own families, in Greece and their place of work, as well as to the “economic miracle” of West Germany in the 60s.

Today, however, things have changed. The new immigration of the crisis era brought to Germany an educated and fully qualified human resource. Scientists and businessmen. Artists and students. Second and third generation expats who study, prod, create, engage in politics, excel. I met these people on my recent visit to Germany. Greeks with a solid European conscience, self-confidence, vision, expectations. Established professionally and socially in a foreign country, they maintain their emotional bond with Greece, grafting the society that welcomed them with their intellectual vigor, tireless hard work and endless creativity.

We follow their progress with joy, we feel proud and we wish each one of them progress and happiness”.
